I used to find myself paralyzed by food choices. The decision of what to put on my plate was so magnified! It was as if I were making a life-altering decision and not just choosing between an apple or banana!
“Eat this!” or “Don’t eat that!” The never-ending, contradictory messages we receive about how and what to eat are enough to make even the most well-intentioned dieter throw in the towel.
After all, if we “can’t do anything right,” why try at all?!
But, as believers, we do not have to make ANY decision on our own- not even what we choose to eat!
How to Give God Control Over Your Eating
Understand the Problem with Dieting
While diets may bear the burden of telling us how to eat, they ultimately become a burden in of themselves!
As we start out following diligently along our chosen plan, it may appear that we are a marvel of self-control. But on the inside, we may still be harboring a heart that yearns for excess food. The very plans that promised us health and freedom can lead to unrestrained eating as a result of its impersonal restrictions.
Feeling like we “can’t” or “shouldn’t” eat certain foods, without the prompting of God, is simply a rule; there is no wisdom in arbitrary rules.
These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Colossians 2:23 NKJV
Diets never “fixed” me as I had hoped. Yes, some weight may have left (and then swiftly returned) but my greed for food was never solved. At one point I even found myself bingeing on carrots. Carrots! Clearly, all of the “don’t eat that’s” I had encountered did not change the state of my heart.
Trust Your Hunger Ques, Your Judgement & The Holy Spirit
To find a Godly balance, marry your wisdom with the voice of the Holy Spirit. For example, it doesn’t take a voice from heaven for us to know that eating donuts for breakfast every day is a pretty bad idea.
Rather than pleading ignorance, let us walk in obedience, as best we can. If there are obvious areas in which we need to exercise self-control, we don’t need to pray for direction. We need to pray for strength!
So, we practice being obedient when God’s will is clear and then ask for guidance when we are feeling unsure. If we are confronted with the latest diet trend and our first inkling is to jump on board, we are best served to take that request to God. He knows us best and will guide us to a healthy body and a clean heart!

I now see the humor in infomercials and their ridiculous claims. However, I used to be a sucker for any promise of a quick fix. You name it, I wanted to try it!
Today, I can see the immense value in being able to filter all these mixed messages through The One who knows me best!
Know that God Cares About Your Eating
You may be comfortable bringing “important” questions to God. But is asking for His help with something as daily as “what you eat?” may not even be on your radar. This is great news!
You now have an entirely NEW way to approach how you eat. No longer are you subject to the wavering “do’s” and “don’t’s” of the world- you now have all you need for living a healthy life. You just need to ask!
By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 2 Peter 1:3 NLT
Have you tried to include God in your food choices only to end up back at the diet starting line… once again?
Take heart! God is not disappointed with you. He understands how easily we are lured away by the shiny promises of before and after photos. Turn back in His direction, share your frustrations with Him, and take hold of His hand, once again.
Let Food Turn You Back to God
I am amazed that no matter how far I wander, God is there, waiting to welcome me back into His fold!
Even though I have more freedom now than I have had since I was a child, I still find myself heaping on the burdens of “healthy eating” from time to time. I forget that, while health and body stewardship ARE important, keeping my heart pure is number one.
You may be like me. Maybe God has used food to be the thing, the thorn in your flesh that brings you back to Him. Take courage my friend and consider yourself flattered- Our Father desires to spend a lot of time with you!
As you can see, healthy choices can be very black-and-white but they can also be gray.
We do best when we use our wisdom to steer away from the obviously unhelpful. Then we rely upon the direction and goodness of the Holy Spirit to steer us when we need some additional help navigating the “what to eat” terrain.
If you find yourself feeling the tug to submit your food choices to the Father, remember to keep His grace as the base of all that you do.
We are never going to eat perfectly and that is no news to Him!
Simply relish the increased fellowship and constant communication you can foster with God!
